Plasma burner and diesel particulate filter. Here, the particulate filter is automatically regenerated by oxidizing the particulate matters collected in the diesel particulate filter.

Client / Market

  • Automobile component and automobile companies

Necessity of this Technology

  • Catalysts deactivation caused by sulfur poison
  • Sometimes, especially idling and urban driving conditions, the exhaust gas temperatures are too low to activate the catalysts

Technical Differentiation

  • Plasma burner can regenerate the diesel particulate filter without aids of catalysts coated on the filter. Thereby, the regeneration process is not dependent on the exhaust gas temperatures and the sulfur content in the fuel. Typically, removal efficiency of the particulate matters using this technology is higher than 95%.
  • Physical size of the plasma burner is 1/100-1/100 of that of a conventional diesel burner. Owing to this compactness, plasma burner could be installed more conveniently.
  • In a conventional diesel burner, combustion process of diesel fuel consists of 4 steps; atomization, evaporation, mixing between the evaporated fuel and air, ignition. In the plasma burner, all of this combustion process occurs in an extremely short time, as like one step process, because of the high temperature condition generated by plasma. Owing to this quick combustion process in plasma burner, the burner is compact and easy to apply to numerous types of vehicles.
  • There is no risk of miss-firing for a plasma burner, therefore, it is safe technology to be applied for cars.

Excellence of Technology

  • The performance and the durability of the plasma burner have been verified through 100,000 km driving test, and starting in the first half of 2015, the company to whom the technology was transferred will participate in the government project “PM Filter Attachment Project for Time-worn Diesel Cars”.
  • The KIMM’s plasma burner technology was transferred to HK-MnS, the exhaust emission reduction apparatus company spun off by Hyundai Kia Motors, and the company has been operating a diesel engine locomotive for subway rail management with the PM filter using a plasma burner since 2009.
  • The technology was awarded the Invention Award from the Korea Intellectual Property Office, and the Technology Award from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, and based on these, the head researcher received the Prime Minister Citation and Industrial Technology Award from the Korean Society of Combustion.
