Q: Can you briefly introduce yourself to us?

Hello, my name is Nguyen Quoc Khanh, and I am a mechatronics engineer originally from Vietnam. I have been living and studying in South Korea for over 10 years, a journey that has profoundly shaped my life. My family and I are now happily settled in Daejeon, where we’ve found a second home. My wife, a fellow graduate of UST, works as a developer for a cutting-edge bioinformatics startup, and our daughter, the heart of our family, is thriving as a 3rd-grade student. She loves her school life, surrounded by wonderful friends and teachers. Daejeon is a city we hold dear, not only for its beautiful scenery but also for its warm, welcoming community that has embraced us.

Q: Tell us more about your current work at KIMM.

Currently, I am working on the development of algorithms for the simulation and calibration of precision multi-axis machine tools. This involves improving the accuracy and performance of CNC machining processes, which are crucial for advanced manufacturing. My work builds on my earlier research in FEM (finite element method) simulations for high-precision mechanisms and the development of laser tracking systems for 3D position measurement. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my efforts contribute to the technological advancement within the field of precision measuring and manufacturing.

Q: How did you come to Korea? To KIMM?

My journey to Korea and KIMM is a story of gratitude and support. I was fortunate to receive immense help and encouragement from professors and mentors in both Vietnam and Korea. I am particularly thankful to Dr. Jeong-Seok Oh, Dr. Chun-Hong Park, and Dr. Bui Ba Chinh, whose mentorship and belief in me have been pivotal. Their guidance opened doors I could never have imagined, and without them, my journey at KIMM might never have begun.

Q: How was your time in Korea?

The 10 years I’ve spent at KIMM have been transformative filled with learning, challenges, and achievements. While every journey has its ups and downs, my time here has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional development. I’ve had the privilege of working with exceptional professors, talented researchers, and supportive colleagues, all of whom have contributed to my growth. The environment at KIMM is warm and collaborative, supported by excellent facilities, from laboratories to dormitories. These years at KIMM are more than just memories - they represent a defining chapter in my life.

Q: What do you like the most about KIMM?

What I love most about KIMM is its serene and inspiring environment. Even after 10 years, walking around the campus still fills me with a sense of peace and reflection. I can still remember the snow-covered paths I walked late at night, moments that provided quiet inspiration. I also deeply miss the vibrant community events we had before COVID-19, like summer soccer tournaments and parties. These moments fostered camaraderie and left lasting impressions of joy and connection. KIMM’s atmosphere is truly one-of-a-kind, blending innovation with warmth.

Q: What was your most memorable moment at KIMM or Korea?

Among many memorable moments, the day of my PhD thesis defense stands out as a defining highlight. It was a winter day, and although it might have been ordinary for others, it was extraordinary for me. The subtle gestures of encouragement from my department - kind words, supportive smiles, and reassuring eye contact - made all the difference. Those small but meaningful acts gave me the strength and confidence to deliver my thesis defense with passion. That day was not only a professional milestone but also a powerful reminder of the importance of community.
