Q: Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Hello, my name is Muhammad Farooq, and I am a Ph.D. student in the integrated Master’s and Ph.D. program at the UST KIMM School, advised by Professor Park Chang-Dae. My research focuses on renewable energy systems, with particular emphasis on thermal processes, heat pump applications and energy conversion technologies. As a student researcher at KIMM, I am actively involved in projects focused on optimizing industrial and district heating systems through the integration of high-efficiency thermal storage and heat pump technologies. My academic journey reflects a strong commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and contributing to their practical implementation in future energy systems.

Q: What motivated you to become a UST Department Representative, and what are your main responsibilities in this role?

I believe that communication plays a vital role in improving the overall experience for both international and local students. For international students in particular, this role is especially meaningful. It encourages active interaction with Korean students, professors, and administrative staff. This engagement is essential for building cultural understanding, improving communication skills, and adapting to the academic and social environment in Korea. As a UST department representative, my primary responsibilities include, addressing student concerns, contributing ideas to enhance student services and assisting in the planning and management of academic events and festivals.

Q: How has your research experience at KIMM contributed to your academic or career development?

My time at KIMM has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional development. Through hands-on experience with heat pumps, thermal energy storage systems, and real-time data simulations, I have gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical expertise in advanced energy technologies. Working alongside experienced researchers and utilizing cutting-edge lab facilities has significantly deepened my understanding of renewable energy systems and enhanced my analytical thinking and problem solving skills both of which are essential for a career in sustainable energy research and development.

Q: Could you tell us about your current research or project?

My current research focuses on the development and optimization of renewable energy-based thermal system integrated with high-temperature heat pump (HTHP) technologies. I am modeling and designing intelligent operational strategies using advanced simulation tools to balance renewable energy input, thermal demand management and storage performance in real-time scenarios. The outcomes are expected to contribute to the development of low-carbon, electrified thermal infrastructure for industrial and district heating systems.

Q: What brought you to Korea and to KIMM in the first place?

Back in Pakistan, I was working as a R&D engineer after completing my undergraduate studies. During that time, I began searching for opportunities to pursue a higher degree abroad. I initially received an offer to study in Canada; however, the program was not fully funded. Around the same time, I came across the UST program in Korea, which stood out due to its strong research focus, academic flexibility, and full scholarship support. After learning more about the research environment at KIMM and realizing that the research field closely aligned with my academic interests, I contacted Prof. Dr. Park Chang-Dae directly via email to explore potential opportunities. His encouraging response, along with the strength of the UST scholarship, led me to join the UST KIMM School. Looking back, it has been a highly rewarding step in both my academic and professional development.

Q: How has your overall experience at KIMM been? Any moments that stood out to you?

My experience at KIMM has been both academically rewarding and personally enriching. The environment in our team has been highly supportive, and I receive invaluable guidance from my advisor and seniors. The KIMM campus provides a comfortable and focused living environment, which has allowed me to fully concentrate on my research and studies. The friendship and support of fellow Pakistani and other international students even more enjoyable and memorable. One of the most memorable moments was presenting my research for the first time at an international conference, an experience that greatly boosted my confidence and motivated me as a researcher. I am truly grateful for the opportunities, support, and friendships that continue to shape my time at KIMM into a deeply fulfilling experience.

Q: What do you like the most about KIMM?

What I value most about KIMM is its highly supportive and research-oriented environment. The laboratories are well-equipped with everything needed for advanced research, and any additional resources are provided efficiently when required. Being involved in research projects has given me the opportunity to apply my skills in practical contexts. In addition to academic support, KIMM regularly organizes seminars, cultural events, and academic festivals that foster collaboration and build a sense of community among researchers. Altogether, these experiences have made my time at KIMM both productive and truly rewarding.

Q: What was your most memorable moment at KIMM or Korea?

While I've had many memorable moments in Korea, seeing snow for the first time was a truly mesmerizing experience. Having grown up in Pakistan, I had never experienced snowfall before, so watching it quietly blanket the streets and campus is a memory I will always cherish. Equally meaningful were the opportunities to travel with my team to different cities across Korea to attend domestic and international conferences. These events not only allowed me to share my research and connect with experts but also gave me the chance to explore local culture, traditions, and regional diversity. Experiencing both academic growth and cultural immersion has made my time at KIMM and in Korea truly special.

Q: Do you have any advice or recommendations for other international students or researchers considering UST or KIMM?

Absolutely. I would encourage students to embrace the challenge of stepping into a new culture and research environment. UST and KIMM provide an excellent platform to grow academically while working on advanced technologies and real-world problems. In my view, research cannot be done alone—it is a team effort. I strongly recommend communicating regularly with your advisor and senior researchers, asking questions, and staying actively engaged. You will find that collaboration and communication are just as important as technical skills in shaping your success.

Q: Is there any message you’d like to share with your colleagues and staff at KIMM?

I would like to sincerely thank all the researchers, mentors, and administrative staff at KIMM for their constant support and guidance. You have helped create an environment where young researchers like me feel empowered and inspired every day. I look forward to continuing meaningful research together and contributing to a more sustainable future through our collective efforts.
